Customizing Your Sound with Editable Waveforms on DEX 3 (v3.9+) - Tips for PCDJ Enthusiasts

Customize DEX 3’s Waveforms with colors of your choice!

DEX 3 offers 4-deck mixing, with each deck showcasing the playing tracks waveform that consist of three color variations that represent low, mid, and high frequency values. You can edit all three colors for each deck independently, allowing you to customize the waveform colors to your preference.

While this guide is regarding waveform color editing, you can use the same color code swap method described below to change other colors within the DEX 3 skins, including the 2-deck and 2-deck simple skins.

How-To Edit DEX 3 Waveform Colors

1) You will need to access the DEX 3 XML skin file you wish to edit. The skin files for DEX 3 are located in the DEX 3 program folder.

If you’re on a Windows 32bit machine, the program folder is located in C: -> Program Files (x86) -> PCDJ -> DEX3 -> Skins.

If you’re on a Windows 64bit machine, the program folder is located in C: -> Program Files -> PCDJ -> DEX3 -> Skins.

If you’re on a MAC the skin files are located inside the application itself. You will need to select the app in the Applications folder and then right click (or Ctrl+click) and select “Show Package Contents” – then, navigate to Contents -> Resources -> Skins.

2) Inside of the DEX 3 Skins folder you will find XML files for each DEX 3 skin variation. The 4-deck default skin will be labeled “dex38_4” and the default (main) 2-deck default skin is labeled “dex38_2”. You will need to right-click (Ctrl + Click on MAC) and open the XML file with a standard text editor such as Notepad on Windows or TextWrangler, Atom, Xcode, etc on MAC.

3) Once you’ve opened up the Skin XML file in a text editor, locate the text section (near the bottom) titled “Sound Display”. It’s in this section where you can edit the color codes for each DEX 3 deck. It’s shown highlighted in the image to the right.

4) The color codes (HEX) you can edit for each deck (Note: we are demonstrating with the 4-deck XML file) are outlined in the image to the right.

As you see, each DEX 3 deck has three color code (HEX) values that can be edited. If you wish to stick with the low, mid, and high frequency color coding values, the first (far left) color code should be the darkest color, the second a lighter color, and the third the lightest color.

You can simply type in or copy and paste in the color code you wish to use, replacing the existing color code. If you do not have a graphics or photo editing application that provides color codes, here’s a handy color code chart .

5) Once you’ve edited the waveform color codes to your preference you can simply save the XML (via the text editor you’re using to edit the color codes) back into the skins folder, replacing the existing XML file already there. Make sure you just SAVE, and do not change the format of the skin file (It needs to remain an XML file). That should do it — launch DEX 3 after saving the XML file and your waveform color edits will be active!
